UK short breaks
With our tans faded and supply of foreign sweets running low, our summer holidays are starting to feel like a distant memory. What better excuse to start planning an autumn getaway!
From city breaks to cheap weekends away, the UK has so much to offer it was tricky for us to narrow down to just three short break suggestions.
The picturesque surroundings of the Peak District National Park are an idyllic place for a romantic weekend away. Sandwiched between Manchester and Sheffield, the Peak District offers a rural retreat where you can enjoy mountain biking, hill walking or just a gentle stroll through the beautiful scenery.
Stay in nearby Matlock, a delightful town with plenty of B&B’s or for a special treat, book a room at the Losehill House Hotel and Spa set in the heart of Hope Valley. Wake up to a rainy day? Then visit the grand Chatsworth House and wander around the impressively decorated rooms and art collections.
Why not visit the beautiful city of Bath? The Romans built the baths in 60AD and since then the city has grown in size and popularity as a spa town. The city is filled with impressive Georgian architecture crafted from local Bath Stone, just one of the reasons it was crowned a world heritage site in 1987.
There are many “must do’s” in Bath including a dip in the Thermae Bath Spa, a visit to the Roman baths, a visit to the Jane Austen Centre and of course a trip around the shops! If the outdoors is more your thing, take refuge in the many parks and gardens or hire a bike and see the city and surrounding countryside on two wheels.
Wales has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt coastlines in the UK and the Gower Peninsula is a prime example. As the UK’s first official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (which basically means it is the Jennifer Laurence of the beach world), it is a gem to visit.
With a varied landscape, from moor and limestone cliffs to golden sandy beaches, there is something to keep everyone happy. If you are looking for a cheap break or a Luxury getaway, the Gower has something to suit all tastes and budgets.
There are also plenty of activities to get stuck into! Get your wetsuit on and brave the waves, take in spectacular shorelines at Three Cliffs Bay, ride a four-legged friend (a horse, not a dog) with Parc-le-Breos Pony Trekking. For some family fun, why not visit a Gower activity centre and take part in rock climbing, abseiling and orienteering?
