Happy New Year! At S&G HQ, these three little words spark excitement over a fresh new year where the possibilities are endless.

We are celebrating all things healthy this January by getting back on the wagon (that we fell off at the start of December) by selecting four healthy New Year resolutions that we are going to try and stick to!


1. Foodie fun

We find that making big changes to the way we eat can sometimes be a little overwhelming, so this year we are taking a slow and steady approach by choosing one or two new foods with great health benefits to introduce to our menus each month.

Starting with beetroot. Not only is it the colour of this winter’s “must have” lipstick but the fibre in beetroot has been shown to increase the level of antioxidant enzymes and white blood cells in the body, so it is pretty good for you and delicious in a ham roll.


2. Most important meal of the day

We promise you it is not just an old wives’ tale! Eating breakfast is really good for you. In short, eating breakfast kicks off your metabolism, helps concentration and is an opportunity to eat foods that you might not eat at other parts of the day, such as whole grains.

We are taking our breakfasts to the next level at S&G HQ by adding flax seeds to our porridge. A rich source of micronutrients, dietary fibre, vitamin B1 and omega-3 we have officially pimped our porridge!


3. Four minutes

Want to stay fit but between work, picking up the kids, cooking, meeting friends etc… you only have 20 minutes spare? Us too! Which is why we are trying out Tabata.

Tabata is fast becoming the most popular form of High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. Tailor-made for those of us pushed for time, Tabata consists of 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times for four minutes of exercise. Add to this routine 10 minutes for a warm up and 5 minutes for a cool down and you have an effective way to increase aerobic and anaerobic fitness in less than 20 minutes.

Make sure you don’t forget to spray on some of our 48-hour antiperspirant deodorants first to stay fresh and dry!


4. Counting sheep

Sleep is an important part of a healthy routine and we will be exploring the benefits of a good night’s sleep and how to get one in next week’s blog. In the meantime, we will be putting away all electronic devices which have a “blue” light such as our smartphones or mobile tablets at least an hour before bed, find out why next week!
